The DA’s new mayor of Tshwane has been on something of a whirlwind financial investigation tour of the city and things aren’t looking great.

Last week Solly Msimanga had a stern warning for the ANC’s former Tshwane rulers; telling them that they’ll soon swap their fancy suits for orange ones as he’s found evidence of their corruption while they were in office.
According to IOL, Msimanga revealed what he calls “Nkandla 2.0,” and promised to bring those responsible to justice. In a visit to Pretoria City Hall, the mayor discovered that even after R90 million worth of renovations, almost nothing had been done to the city hall.
Msimanga expressed his shock at the amount of money wasted on the as yet incomplete project.
“It’s quite shocking that R90m later, we have nothing but another version of the Nkandla debacle where money has been spent, but when you look at what has happened, it’s actually a shame.”
“We’ve really tampered with the rich heritage of this city and this is something that I am still to investigate and find out really how people can justify spending that much money for the damage they did,” Msimanga said.
The mayor added that this visit and its subsequent report forms part of a much larger, thorough forensic report of what had been happening in the Tshwane City Council before he took charge; and that the complete forensic audit would be handed over to the authorities once completed.
Even though so much had already been spent on the Pretoria City Hall, Msimanga said more would unfortunately have to be spent to complete the project — albeit under his supervision this time – in order to complete the DA’s new Tourism plan for the capital.
“Within a 2km radius of the city centre, we have the Union Buildings, Freedom Park, Voortrekker Monument and museums – all with a potential to connect us to the many investment opportunities.”
Msimanga added that, while tourism would be a major contributing factor to the new Tshwane, buildings like the city hall could also generate a lot of money from the film industry.
Along with his City Hall visit, the mayor also popped in at the Giant Stadium in Soshanguve and the Rooiwal purification centre to determine whether the hundreds of millions spent on these two projects was above board.
“There are a lot of sites that I will be visiting in the coming weeks, but what I don’t want to do is announce where I will be going to otherwise people could try to sweep things under the carpet.”
“I want to continue to do these unannounced visits, so I can see first-hand what is not working, so that when we start implementing solutions, at least I would have seen it for myself,” Msimanga said.
