Black First Land First (BLF) leader Andile Mngxitama has warned that his group will take further action against the public protector for refusing to investigate corruption by “white capitalists”.

“We will go back to Soweto and talk to the young people there,” Mngxitama said.

“We will mobilise them, and if we are not happy, we will come back in our numbers.”

Mngxitama’s comment followed a meeting with Deputy Public Protector Kevin Malunga at his offices in Pretoria yesterday afternoon.

The BLF leader was yesterday accompanied by his supporters, most of whom were arrested three weeks ago for occupying the public protector’s office.

The movement claimed Public Protector Thuli Madonsela was turning a blind eye to corruption by “white capitalists”, who had “stolen” R26 billion from the SA Reserve Bank (Sarb) during apartheid.

BLF demanded that Madonsela address a complaint of state capture by “white capitalists”, including billionaire Johann Rupert, lodged with her office in March.

Mngxitama said the movement had been writing letters to Madonsela, urging her to investigate the allegation, but had not received any response.

According to Malunga, his meeting yesterday with the movement was fruitful.

“The purpose of the meeting,” Malunga said, “was to iron out our differences and chart the way forward.”

He said the public protector’s office was investigating the loss of R3.2 billion from the Sarb during apartheid.

But Mngxitama remained disappointed by the scope of the investigation.

“Should the report not reflect the R26 billion, there is going to be a big problem,” Mngxitama said. “Our children really need that money.”
