CAPE TOWN – There’s a heavy police presence in the Du Noon area this morning following a violent protest. The protest, by a group of community members, apparently started in the early hours of this morning. Police and traffic service vehicles line Malibongwe Drive this morning and on the corner of Potsdam Road and Stable Way, officers are standing ready for any eventuality.
When Eyewitness News arrived on the scene, two stun grenades could be heard exploding.
Burning tyres dot a road at the scene. Potsdam Road has been closed and MyCiTi bus services, which include routes from Table View in to the city, have had to be suspended.
Disgruntled Du Noon residents are calling for better service delivery in their community. The area has seen a spate of violent demonstrations in recent weeks. More than 1,000 residents have gathered on the corner of Dumani Road and Winning Way.

“We are lacking houses and the community is over populated. As you can see each and every day there is a blocked drain and each and every day there are no playgrounds for our children.”
