THE publication on social media of a list of alleged rapists at Rhodes University can never be condoned.

It is not permissible by law, and could potentially bring devastating consequences for both the alleged victims and perpetrators.

However, it is the level of anger and frustration among students which led to the publication of the list that we should all take note of.

Students at the institution have gone on a campaign to highlight what they say is a rape culture at the institution. It is a culture they say further traumatises alleged victims of rape.

A system designed – intentionally or not – to shield perpetrators from the repercussions of their actions.

This week students published disturbing responses they say are often given by the university’s management to those who report rape.

“Are you sure you want to go through with this? You will ruin his reputation,” one victim was allegedly told.

“Girls need to learn how to be firmer when they say no,” read another alleged response plastered by protesting students on university walls.

It is fair to point out that these claims are yet to be tested through formal investigations by the university or by a court of law.

However, the danger of such reckless and callous statements is not only felt when they are formally proven to be factual.

It is the perception – whether right or wrong – that the university fails to protect and further violates rape victims which perpetuates this violent culture.

Rape on campus is not a new phenomenon.

It is simply an extension of the South African culture of brutality and sexual violence meted out to men, women and children daily.

But there should be no space for it.

It must be fought on every front: in our homes, schools, communities and certainly on our campuses.

We therefore need to do all we can to build a society that protects the rights of all, a justice system that is effective and inspires confidence.

Importantly, we need to build one that does not further violate those who have already endured such heinous crimes.
