“Good governance is the cornerstone of a well-run city or town. The ANC wants an end to all forms of corruption and will diligently pursue all those who are corrupt‚” said Zuma.

“The ANC will ensure that all local municipalities‚ district municipalities and metropolitan cities achieve unqualified audits and spend their budgets on what has been approved in councils‚” he added.
This comes as Auditor General Kimi Makwetu‚ earlier this year said his office would be checking that departments which are given money have the necessary resources and personnel to use the money.
Makwetu said the audit analysis he conducted in the 2014/2015 financial year‚ indicated that most government departments were not doing well as they received unqualified reports with findings.
However‚ some improvements in accountability by municipalities were observable in the AG’s annual reports on local government.
The president assured his supporters that the ANC would make government appointments based on merit and also decrease outsourcing of basic services.
“We will insist that councils employ appropriately qualified or experienced senior personnel. We discourage municipalities from outsourcing the basic services they are able to render themselves‚” added Msholozi‚ as he is popularly known by his supporters.
Presently‚ local government consists of 278 municipalities and 57 municipal entities‚ or organisations used by municipalities to deliver services‚ including utility companies.
Messages of support for the ANC were delivered by alliance partners the South African Communist Party‚ Congress of South African Trade Unions and the South African National Civic Organisation.
Dressed in their ANC regalia‚ supporters and members danced and chanted liberation songs right till the end of the rally.
