Yet another suspect was burnt while vandalising a substation

On Wednesday, August 26 residents in Tasbet Park, Duvha Park, Extension 16 and surrounding areas were left without electricity as the power tripped at the substation.

The suspect was caught red handed when the electricity tripped and he was found lying next to the substation with server burns.

The suspect was placed under arrest for cable theft and he was supposed to appear in Witbank Magistrates Court on Monday, August 31 but the case was postponed as the suspect is still in hospital recovering.

The Emalahleni City Council could not give an estimate time when the power would be restored as the whole substation had to be checked.

Emalahleni City Council has an on going problem with cable theft and people vandalising substations.

On March 5 a woman was electrocuted in her home in Kwa-Guqa in Extension 10. The police were on scene and so was the investigation team from the council. It was determined that it was an illegal connection.

On March 4 there was a huge power outage which affected Ben Fleur, Reyno Ridge, Tasbet Park, Extension 16, the area around Pop ’n Daisy, Bankenveld Estate and all the Duvha Extensions.

After investigation from the municipality it was discovered that the bulk supply cable to these areas was damaged due to attempted cable theft across the N4 highway.

On Thursday, February 26 a person burnt badly all over his body whilst vandalising a substation. He managed to run away, but his family later took him to hospital where police picked him up.
